Puppy Won't Eat

I'm not jumping in here to start trouble, I just want to say one thing.

My Missy, Cairn terrier passed away November 9th 2004 at the age of 17.

Diabetes was mentioned, yes it's on the rise in pets. Missy was diagnosed with diabetes at age 13 so we managed her diabetes for 4 good years. She died of liver disease. Brown rice is not good for a diabetec and I wouldn't give it to a healthy dog as well. I learned alot in 4 years dealing with diabetes and reading about it. I will never know how and why Missy got diabetes but I have a few ideas. Maybe being over weight, maybe cortosone/predisone in her younger years for colitis. I will never know but now with Kramer I do watch what he eats and he only gets Canidae and there snap treats. I never had anyone in the animal medical field tell me too feed canned food, only dry. Missy was on W/D kibble until the diabetes, then we went to the canned prescription w/d due to the diabetes, the canned didn't have the perservitives in it like the kibble and alot less fat.

Kramer is 100% kibble

Hi Missyforever,

Missy must have been a wonderful dog, so nice you remember her in your screen name. So nice as well that she was with you for 17 years, never long enough, but a grande old age for a dog indeed.

If you do not want to feed your dog brown rice or any rice, than you might want to reconsider using Canidae. The first four ingredients they list for their dry kibble on their web site are chicken meal, turkey meal, brown rice, white rice ... Their snap biscuits contain several grains: barley, dark rye, light rye, brown rice, oatmeal and rice.

Lots of people on this web site seem to feed their dogs Canidae and think highly of it. It's not available here in the U.K.

Best,

Stacey

Hi again Toomanypaws,

Agree there are some breeders who are not exactly shining examples of individuals interested in the health and welfare of the animals they breed. And there are more than a few, especially in the world of confirmation showing, who are a tad "eccentric" ;).

Guess it 's like all things, you learn by personal experience and talking to people you respect when to ignore advice and when to trust it.

Hi Stacey,

Yes, I agree w/ you. It's a shame that some of these breeders give such a bad name to breeding when there truly are those breeders who are dedicated to improving their breed and not in it for just financial gain. I guess it's like that in every professions, you have to weed out the bad from the good.

I can imagine what goes on in conformation showing. I've heard some crazy stories which makes me wonder how much is fixed.

Cairnmania,

Thank you very much for the nice words for my Missy. I hope you had a chance to visit her memorial. I do feed Kramer canidae and I'm aware of the listed ingredients. I feel if it's all balanced in a food as Canidae thats fine, I just wouldn't add any brown or white rice, I wouldn't give him any more carbs than what he is getting in his diet. It is just like corn products etc... Missy did very well for 11 years on w/d well we all know the peanut hulls etc... are not the greatiest but she did wonderful and lived a wonderful 17 years still not long enough. We all learn as we go along, no food is perfect, I wish it was, all we can do is try to do better and do what we feel is best for us pups.

I think all our worrying about these little guys diets is really funny.

I have just returned from walking rufus who tried to eat Pooh, plastic bags , flowers, mud and any rubbish he could get his teeth into, acting like he has never been given a good meal in his life !

Sandy,

I had to chuckle. Kramer is on Canidae and he too goes for a walk too see what he can grab and eat! He rather chew up paper than eat his food LOL

There funny!
